A night to remember

It's been more than 24 hours since we won Power Jam 2008, but the fact that we actually beat the odds to emerge victorious is still sinking in.

At one point during yesterday's soundcheck, I wondered to myself if I had the weakest vocals among the five vocalists. Technically speaking, I also knew that we weren't the strongest band of the night.

But I really wanted to win. In fact I think we all did, to an extent that it almost got in the way of our performance, which included "Lollipop" and a cover of "Umbrella". I was so nervous at the beginning of "Lollipop" that my throat went completely dry, while I could feel fatigue setting in by the time I sang the final stanzas of "Umbrella".

As we huddled together backstage while the results were announced, I felt tears streaming down my face and "I wanna win...I wanna win...I wanna win..." ringing in my head.

And win we did, which left me tearing like a wreck on stage, followed by feeling the unfamiliar adrenalin rush of holding a trophy up in the air.

Singing "Lemonade" after that was surreal. It felt so good to sing certain lines from the song while spotting familiar faces in the crowd. And as the smoke machine started to do its thing, the night soon came to a close with hugs, handshakes and love in the air...

Thank you to everyone who made this happen, and for those of you who couldn't come down to cheer us on, do check out the video that Jianping posted in the entry below that chronicles what happened before our performance, our cover of "Umbrella", and last but not least, the moment of truth =)

If It Wasn't For You (not the song...)

If it wasn't for your kind encouragements, we wouldn't be where we are today as a band...
If it wasn't for your astoundingly loud screams and cheers last night, we wouldn't have that much fun on stage...
If it wasn't for you, King Kong Jane will just be another band drifting around without any meaning...

With all love and sincerity, THANK YOU for being there for us last night, making us the band with the loudest support. Special hugs to Vivian, Kevin Mathews and Leonard Soosay for your kind advice for the past year... to Peepshow and S.P.O.N.G.E, thank you for always being such great friends to us... to our hall friends, school friends and everyone who took time to go down to Zouk on a Tuesday evening, THANK YOU very much for all the love... to the Power 98 crew, you guys are a really fun bunch of people to be with! to the other 4 finalists: Soul Excess, Madhatter, Page and Aurigami, you guys seriously rocked the stage last night and it was really great to have gotten to know you... keep on rocking! To Weetz and Pris, thank you for always being at our gigs to take videos and pictures of us...

Yup I know it is kinda lame and I'm like giving one of those long boring thank you speeches... but we are really grateful for having great friends like you, the prize belongs to all of you guys as well!!!

Thank you everyone!!! =) Stay tuned for more pictures!

The Finals

The Power Jam 2008 Finals will take place next Tuesday (29th July) at Zouk. Whether or not we win, you can bet that we'll be giving it our best shot. And for that reason alone, we hope that you'll be there to join in the fun.

Zouk is located at 17 Jiak Kim Street. Doors will open at 7.30pm, and entry is free.

If you have a handphone, SMS 9820 9800 and save the autoreply. If you're among the first 100 to flash the autoreply at the entrance of Zouk on that night, a free drink and goody bag are yours to keep.

The five finalists will be performing in the following order: Soul Excess, Madhatter, Page, Aurigami & King Kong Jane.

Big names like Electrico, Plain Sunset and West Grand Boulevard will also be performing on that night, so you could say that this is shaping up to be the biggest celebration of local music this year.

Wish us luck people, and see you next Tuesday =)

After Hours

Now everyone knows what KKJ really stands for

Just got home after our interview at Power 98!

Sebastian was really friendly, and it was quite an experience to be interviewed 'live' on-air as a band for the first time. Pity Ruishen couldn't be there. Speaking of Ruishen, he'll be back in the army for the next few months, which means we'll only be able to practice on weekends from now on.

If you missed our interview on Power 98, shame on you! But we basically talked about how we infamously got our band name, Jianping having most of the albums by the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys, Renquan's habit of taking a dump before gigs, and us playing "Lollipop" as our original for the finals next Tuesday...

The interview then ended with an acoustic version of "If It Wasn't For You" that we specially recorded for Power 98. We're trying to see if we can upload a recording of the interview online, but in any case, the countdown begins!

Only one week left to the finals of Power Jam 2008 at Zouk!

Dressed to kill

We went shopping for the Power Jam finals today!
I think we've never spent so much on clothes for any event as a band before...

Remember to tune in to Power 98 tomorrow night (Monday, 21st July) at 10pm to catch us being interviewed about Power Jam!

So far so good?

I hit my front teeth with my mic while performing the first song during last night's gig. Ruishen had cramps all over halfway through, while Jianping apparently puked and swallowed it all back in. Oh, and minutes before the gig, I spilled an entire cup of frappuccino into my slingbag in the dressing room.

It's a miracle none of us fell off stage...

Anyway, thanks to Patrick for landing us the gig, Syai for helping us out for the soundcheck, the trio from NYC who came down to interview us, friends who popped by to cheer us on, and to Weetz for the following video of "Someday Somehow":

As you can see, I tried my best to dress for the ironic "Bright & Sunny" event name...

Next up: a 'live' interview on Power 98 this coming Monday at 10pm, and the Power Jam finals on the 29th at Zouk!

Seeing purple

After exchanging our ICs for visitor passes, depositing our handphones in the smallest lockers on earth, waiting for everyone to arrive and resisting the urge to respond to one ironic statement, we recorded an acoustic version of "If It Wasn't For You" for Power 98 at CMPB yesterday.

If they tell us when they're playing it on air, we'll tell ya.

They did tell us that the photoshoot scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled though, which means we didn't really have to choose the shirts and jeans we chose on Sunday. *frowns at unhappening pink business shirt*

They also told us that a photo of us has been uploaded on the official Power Jam website, which you can visit by clicking here:
http://www.power98.com.sg/pages/power_jam.php

And in case you're wondering, we have absolutely nothing to do with the purple font...

We heart sponsors

Lee Jeans happens to be a sponsor for Power Jam 2008, so we headed down to one of their stores at Junction 8 on Sunday to get ourselves a sponsored top and a pair of jeans each. We chose to not go with the obvious choice of t-shirts and denim jeans, so you'll see if we did the right thing when the publicity shots for the finals are out.

Tomorrow night will see us heading down to Power 98 to record an acoustic version of "If It Wasn't For You", which will hopefully get some airplay before the Power Jam finals. Also on the cards are a photo shoot and an interview on "After Hours", one of the radio station's programmes, so do stay tuned for details.

In the meantime, here's another video of our performance at Raffles City for the Singapore Arts Festival. I totally flubbed the first few lines of the song, but I think I looked good that day. So just watch it anyway!

If It Wasn't For This Boy

If you missed the Power Jam semifinals, here's a video of the performance that got us into the top 5:

The video starts with our cover of "This Boy", followed by "If It Wasn't For You". Towards the end, you can see how I tried my best to get the rest of the band to end the song prematurely, because of how they didn't see that the organisers were already holding up a sign to tell us that our time was up.

Extremely traumatising on that day, but very hilarious and unglam in hindsight!
