First the snare drum, then the microphones

The crowd at NUS last night was smaller than we expected, but they also turned out to be one of the most appreciate audiences we've ever performed to.

We arrived as Ugly In The Morning were wrapping up their set, and opened the show with "Crowded". Unfortunately, the stand for the snare drum broke after that, which led to us performing "Go Away" with Jianping supporting the snare drum between his legs!

There was no choice but to get off stage, but when we returned with "Lollipop" and "If It Wasn't For You", the response from the audience was really amazing. It was particularly cool when this row of guys started dancing from one side of the hall to another whenever our choruses kicked in.

Halfway through "Lemonade", the microphones went dead, which surprisingly led to cheers of encouragement from the audience! I remember thinking to myself: this should have been our audience during last year's Baybeats!

Electrico and Great Spy Experiment delivered technically impressive sets after us, but it was Sixology that really put a smile on my face. Their medley of covers went down really well with the crowd, and the chemistry between the band members was such a joy to watch. As I was watching them, I couldn't help thinking to myself that at the end of the day, it's really important to remember to have fun while doing what you do...

P.S. Thanks for having us NUS, and thanks to Jem for standing in for Ruishen

Dun play play

We've just received news that our gig this Friday is only open to NUS undergraduates, so if you've already spread the news to people who aren't from NUS, do unspread it!

We've also just received the following list of performers for the event:

7.30 - 8.00pm - EIC
8.30 - 9.00pm - Ugly in the Morning
9.15 - 9.45pm - King Kong Jane
10.20 - 10.40pm - Electrico
10.55 - 11.25pm - The Great Spy Experiment
11.40 - 12.10pm - Sixology

Power eh?

Jam N Hop

We'll be having our first gig after Power Jam this Friday. Strangely enough, I can't seem to find any information about the event online, not to mention an existing poster.

So here goes:

Event: Jam N Hop 2008: Pandemonium
Date: 22 August 2008 (Friday)
Venue: NUS Multi-purpose Sports Hall 1
Time: 7.30 pm onwards

We'll be performing a half hour set after 9pm, so do spread the word. Last but not least, Ruishen won't be performing with us due to NS commitments, so Jeremy from Amateur Takes Control will be filling in.

And so the countdown to the end of the work week begins...

Shots from the semis

Some of the better photos we have of ourselves at the Power Jam semifinals, held at Timbre more than a month ago!

BerryHappy

As part of our Power Jam win, we went to Hong Lim Complex this morning for a photoshoot at BerryHappy Photography. A couple of make-up artists and a hairstylist were there to make us look less hideous than we usually do, while we did our part by wearing what we wore for the Power Jam finals.

Sarah was also around to give us posing advice, while Syai from S.P.O.N.G.E. turned out to be the freelance writer from Youth.sg who had to interview us! Last but not least, Sok Eng was a really professional and patient photographer, despite our numerous failed attempts to look "spontaneous".

Now I know what people mean when they say it's not as easy as it looks to be a model.

We'll let you guys know once the photos can be viewed online or something. In the meantime, tune in to Power 98 as often as you can! There's an ad that congratulates us on our win, while the acoustic version of "If It Wasn't For You" is also currently on rotation!

If you're more of a TV than radio person, watch MTV! An interview of us just after winning Power Jam is being aired at random timeslots!

Make it or break it, as long as you're alive

Thanks to my current userpic on Facebook, friends have been congratulating me for becoming rich thanks to Power Jam. Which is somewhat amusing, considering how the cash we're going to receive is nowhere near $50,000. Moreover, we've yet to hear from the organisers as to how and when we're going to receive our cash prize of $5,000...

As far as we understand, the rest of the $45,000 consists of a management contract with Music & Movement (which we should be signing very soon), a distribution deal with Universal Music (for our upcoming debut album), and the recording of an EP with Leonard Soosay (who strangely enough, is already helping us out with our first full-length album) and 2 weeks of supposed radio airplay on Power 98.

Maybe they'll sit us down to explain how everything's going to work soon, maybe they won't. But in the meantime, we're looking forward to an upcoming interview with a local website, a national newspaper, a photoshoot, and a gig in NUS on August 22nd, where we're most likely to perform this song:

Too rock for pop, and too pop for rock

Colin being typically emo and everything haha.

The underground is too heavy for the mainstream, and mainstream is too wussy for the underground. Here we are, stuck in the middle of the firefight. I still say we're more like a bridge between the two.

Ruishen (aka Ark) here. I'm usually the quiet, brooding person in the band, but here are some thoughts on the whole powerjam experience.

When we got through the semis, we were immediately hit with the reality of how tough the finals were going to be. Here were 4 other bands that totally floored us during the audition and semi rounds. We were surprised to have gotten through the semis at all heh. Personally I thought Monster Phunk (or Funk? Sorry Fadz) was totally incredibly awesome.

The weeks following the semis were all about planning, discussions, strategising, and talking to a whole lot of people in and out of the industry. We more or less came up with the following.
1. If we played anything funky, there was no way to outdo Soul Excess and Madhatter
2. If we played anything heavy, we would be slaughtered by Aurigami and Page.

Our only hope was to pull out our most basic, most poppish song and pray that the judges see marketing potential in that, or don't like heavy stuff, or... or whatever... It was a gamble, and we were frightened by it, but we knew it had to be done.

The 4 bands had great coordinated instrument parts and talented musicians. So what did we do? We decided not to try and compete in any of those areas at all. Instead of working out complicated parts... We went shopping. We actually walked around in the clothes we were shopping for to make sure we had a cohesive band look. We must have talked to like more than 20 people in and out of the music industry to get their opinions on what we should do for the competition. And have debated amongst ourselves more we should have.

I guess it paid off. We've made new friends, and I guess new enemies, such is the reality of these matters.

On a personal note,
Soul Excess had their crazy band coordinated breaks again, I was grinning from ear to ear when I heard them. Awesome stuff.
Madhatter was SOOOooooo disco rock. These guys can totally control a club.
Page was suuper entertaining. I totally loved the lead guitarist's getup, especially when he walked up to do the solo. Perfect.
Aurigami made all our jaws drop during the soundcheck. That girl has mad vocal skills. Pity we couldn't properly catch them during the actual set, could only watch in nervous anticipation of our turn from the side.

Here's to any new band thinking of joining a competition or such. Don't be discouraged when you hear how good other bands are. It's not always about skills. Music is music. Everyone has different musical tastes. And if you work hard enough, plan hard enough, and want it hard enough, you just might get it.

Super Rich Bobbas

When we performed for Baybeats last year, I remember being very affected by negative feedback about us that I came across online. Although there were bouquets among the brickbats, I found it really hard to not take some of the more mean-spirited comments personally.

One year on, we're in the limelight once more, thanks to winning Power Jam. And as I expected, there are cheers and jeers all over again.

If there's one thing that I've learnt about being in a local band for the past three years, it's that you simply can't please everybody. No matter which genre of music you perform or how successful you are, there will be people out there who you can never win over, for reasons both within and out of your control.

Having said that, if you find yourself striving to please everyone, then I think you need to do some soul-searching. Because that will never happen, no matter how hard you try to make it so.

At the end of the day, it's all all about knowing what you stand for, and working towards achieving your goals, no matter what they may be. After all, the world we live in could really afford to use less talk and more action.

Speaking of world, we were invited into the virtual space of Habbo last night. After modifying our very own avatars, we were interviewed online by the good people at Habbo, and got to interact with Habbo users in the virtual lounge of Nokia's Independent Artists Club. Stay tuned for photos!
